Favicon de Montessori en Vitoria-Gasteiz para niños y niñas de todas las edades en Pais Vasco

Montessori School Vitoria-Gasteiz is a private, trilingual, and secular educative project based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spanish Basque Country.

Our educative project is based on the Montessori pedagogy, which focuses on each child’s development and promotes values such as positive communication, cooperation, participation, empathy, tolerance, confidence and respect for nature. We offer a secure and stimulating environment that invites the child to explore and actively participate in order to fully develop their unique potential. Each child makes their own discoveries, awakens their senses, frees their imagination, and discovers the joy of learning.

Enrollment is open for January 2018 and September 2018, with places available in classes of 7 month-1 year, 1-3 years, 3-6 years, and 6-12 years.

The Montessori pedagogy, designed by Dr. Maria Montessori, has been active for more than one hundred years, making it the world’s most extended pedagogy.

Montessori teaching is a scientific pedagogy, based on a child’s knowledge and capacities, which promotes independence, inner values, self-esteem, development through experimentation, and learning by doing.

The central idea of this philosophy is the absolute belief that the child can develop his or her capacities and values, to what extent depends on how suitable the social environment is for learning.

The Montessori method is not a didactic method; it is a philosophy of life that considers the process of human development. If we are aware of it, respect it, and develop it harmoniously we contribute to awaken an integral HUMAN BEING, which is capable of working both for himself and for humanity.

This requires at least three essential elements:

A prepared space: suitable for the children’s necessities, with Montessori materials and furniture adapted to their age.

A prepared adult-guide, trained in the Montessori Pedagogy who is observant, a good planner, creative and a knowledge lover.

A work environment based on freedom, responsibility and respect.

The Montessori philosophy is committed to the students’ active participation in the knowledge and learning process. If the students are developing actively, the result will be reflective, analytical and active individuals that participative in their social context.

To educate the child is not “teaching” him – it´s providing him with a prepared environment so that he learns to educate himself with confidence and independence in a active, free and responsible way.

What do the children in a Montessori classroom gain? They learn reading skills, mathematics, science, geometry, history and geography – all the subjects that they need to know, but they achieve this knowledge through their own desire to learn. They follow their passions and make connections between ideas and subjects. We seldom learn only by listening to a teacher or reading a textbook.

The spaces or environments in Montessori schools belong to the children and are adapted to their needs. They provide materials that cover knowledge from different fields, such as: Practical life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, History, Geography, etc… These subjects are ordered and have an intrinsic logical sequence that prepare the child for current as well as future learning. The materials are distributed in different classrooms and the children are in mixed groups of three different ages.

ENVIRONMENT AGE
Infant Community 1 – 3
Children’s House 3 – 6
Workshop I 6 – 9
Workshop II 9 – 12
Workshop III 12 – 15 (High School)
Workshop IV 15 – 18 (A-levels)

The Montessori environment belongs to the children: they look after it, are responsible for it, they take care of it, and respect it. They are constantly shown that they are capable and that “They can do it!

Everything that the child learns today will be useful tomorrow. Every material that is used in our classrooms will prepare students for the one they will use in the future. Our students learn in a practical and sensorial way that allows them to solve complicated mathematical formulas that, in a regular school setting, would require a much more advanced age.

In addition, the materials are designed in order for the child to work with and resolve them, constantly offering the child moments of success, which will enhance his or her self-esteem and desire to learn more.

Once the adult-guide has presented the adequate work materials to the child, autonomous work takes place, in which the child decides what to work with. This is when the child also achieves total concentration. The child is in the “here and now”, concentrated, enjoying the activity, and without judgement from classmates.

These moments, time spent in the classroom, produce neuronal connexions. This is similar to meditating, when one is fully aware of what happens around us. Dr. Montessori discovered that “when we trust a child and he chooses his work we permit him to concentrate. He will come out of that period of concentration (meditation, contemplation) refreshed and full of kindness towards others”. This natural kindness and compassion is innate; these values do not need to be taught, they only need to be protected.

For her classroom work, she was nominated on three occasions to the Nobel Peace Prize. Today, neuroscience has confirmed this theory.

EDUCATION IN VALUES

In education, the most important thing is each child’s physical, emotional, and intellectual wellbeing. Education should provide a child with training that allows him to develop his own identity. Hence, it is necessary to potentate behavior and values that configure and model the children’s ideas, feelings, and actions. The values help them grow and allow a harmonious development of all the human being’s qualities.

Love of values is better transmitted through behaviour and example than through words.

They are necessary to learn, because values follow us throughout life.

Learn to know how one is, what one’s feelings mean, how to make oneself understood, and how to understand others.

Learn to listen, to be available, to be tolerant, not to judge others, to work, to win and lose, and to make decisions.

Early childhood education is fundamental for developing behavior and interpersonal relations. It is necessary to develop a series of abilities that will create character traits such as security, self-esteem and self-sufficiency. We need to allow the children to fully mature as people.

Four key values

Self-esteem: if one feels loved one will accept and love others.

Tolerance: Respect is crucial for coexistence.

Responsibility: consistency, generosity.

Cooperation: the common good, shared work.
